Irritation and cuts can occur especially in the beginning when you are new to wet shaving. Especially cuts before you feel used to or comfortable using the razor. But there is no need to worry, help is available.
How can I prevent irritation and cuts?
Both cuts and irritation can be counteracted by having several steps in your wet shaving routine, if you currently only have one step, for example, during the wet shave itself, you can add, for example, one step before and use a product such as shaving oil or pre-lotion. Shaving oil and pre-lotion aim to both further moisturize the skin before shaving and increase the friction during shaving between the skin and the razor blade. You can also add a step afterwards and use an after shave balm, lotion, or splash which can all help to counteract irritation and cuts associated with wet shaving. An after shave splash in particular can have a high antiseptic effect. Lotions and to some extent balm can also have a natural antiseptic effect.
What should I do if I get irritation and cuts?
A simple traditionally used kit to heal small cuts and irritation that have come up without having to walk around with plasters or small pieces of paper on the face is to use an alum stick or alum stone that has an antiseptic effect. This means that the pores of the skin contract around the wound and stop the bleeding that can occur. This is especially true for minor irritation and cuts.
What exactly is alum?
Alum is a more colloquial name for potassium aluminum sulfate that is used together with water to stop cuts and irritation by having a disinfecting effect on injuries. The substance is natural but refined through a chemical process. We offer alum either on pins that fit slightly smaller wounds and on stones that fit slightly larger, but still small wounds in general.
How do I use alum sticks and alum stone?
Always have alum sticks or alum stones on hand when wet shaving, when cuts and irritation from wet shaving occur, you want to be able to quickly relieve them. Slightly moisten the top of the pin or a little bit of the stone and hold it against the wound. Alum acts quickly but can sting slightly but is otherwise harmless.
