How to clean your shaving tools

Hand on heart, how thorough are you with the daily cleaning of your shaving tools? Is it starting to look like they have seen their best days? Don’t worry, there is still hope! Of course, the daily cleaning is essential for a long life of your tools, but every now and then a more thorough refresh is needed that makes them like new again! Below you can read about how to proceed.

Safety razor

Start by unscrewing all the parts apart to access everywhere, then use a soft brush, such as a toothbrush, to remove all the hair and any soap residue. If you can’t reach everywhere with the brush, you can use a swab. Take the opportunity to do this cleaning procedure at the same time as you change the blades to keep the razor hygienic. The same method can be used when cleaning shavette.

Razor

A razor knife needs to be maintained after each use with a sharpener to keep its sharpness and for a long life, but occasionally a more thorough sharpening is required and then a sharpening stone or honing stone is used. The stone is used to sharpen the blades of the razor and give it a whole new sharpness. Grindstones are available in different thicknesses, where just like with sandpaper, you start with the coarsest and grind your way to the finest. When the knife is finished, groom it as usual, and when you can cut off a hanging hair, it is sharp enough for shaving. We offer grindstones of several different sizes and qualities, both full-sized in racks and small ones for the toiletry bag.

Shaving brush

The key to maintaining the quality of your shaving brush is to be thorough with daily cleaning and drying by rinsing the brush through in lukewarm water and letting it dry hanging in a shaving brush stand, but sometimes a deeper cleaning is needed. To clean your shaving brush deeply, you can use a mild shampoo, shampoo for animals also works great for shaving brushes with real hair. Use a small amount together with water and lather up as you would when using a shaving soap. Rinse thoroughly. Then fill the shaving bowl with lukewarm water and a few drops of apple cider vinegar, stir the brush and leave on for a few minutes. Then rinse through the brush and let dry hung upside down. To remove soap deposits in the base or if the brush is attacked by mold, you should drown it in a sterilizing and dissolving liquid. They can be bought at the pharmacy.
