These are only recommendations and guidelines. In the end, it’s always up to you, what you prefer and feel comfortable with. If you are unsure, we recommend trying you out or contacting us and we will help you.
What exactly is a double razor blade?
Basically, all double razor blades are the same, they consist of a thin metal disc with two abrasive edges that are equally sharp on both edges and sides. Therefore, it does not matter which side or edge you choose to shave with. Double razor blades today are made almost exclusively of stainless steel, unlike carbon steel, which was used in the past and is still used in razors and other sharp knives. The advantage of carbon steel versus stainless steel is that it is possible to get a sharper edge with carbon steel, but is not as resistant to water.
Double razor blades today also have an alloy, a coating of, for example, platinum. This is done so that the razor blade keeps its sharpness longer but also be slightly more gentle on the skin. When you shave, it is a piece of hard sharp metal that you put against your skin and beard hairs. If you are not careful, the skin can be damaged.
What distinguishes different double razor blades?
What distinguishes double razor blades is the sharpness, which is divided into a scale of 1-5. A razor blade with sharpness 1 is very forgiving and soft razor blade. A razor blade with a sharpness of 5 is an extra sharp razor blade.
Extra soft razor blades
Extra soft razor blades have a sharpness of 1. It should be said right away that these razor blades are in no way dull or not sharp. Like any other razor blade, they will cut off the beard hairs.
These razor blades are especially suitable for those with sparse beard growth or if you have very sensitive skin. Creator leaves can expose your skin to unnecessary risks. These leaves are very forgiving and skin-friendly. At the same time, these blades can be perceived as difficult to shave with. This is because they are soft and require the right amount of weight to do an effective job of shaving off the beard hairs. If you push too hard, there is a risk that you will injure yourself.
Soft razor blades
Soft razor blades have sharpness 2. These are excellent, for example, if you have coarse beard hairs but slightly sparser beard growth. If you have sensitive skin that can easily be damaged, these may also be an option for you.
As with the extra soft razor blades, it’s important to think about applying the right amount of pressure to the razor when shaving. Otherwise, there is a risk that you will shave too aggressively, which can lead to injuries in the long run.
Sharp razor blades
Sharp razor blades with a sharpness of 3 are what is roughly in the middle of the scale. This is also an excellent blade to start with, to start from if you are new to wet shaving. Suitable for many different beard and skin types. Everything from slightly sparser to slightly thicker beard, from slightly more sensitive to normal skin.
When recommending razor blades for a beginner in wet shaving, we always recommend razor blades from this sharpness. Then you get a razor blade with good sharpness without being either too sharp or too soft. Then you can choose whether you want to use a sharper or a softer razor blade. Many also choose to stay here and continue with the same type of razor blade.
Very sharp razor blades
Razor blades with sharpness 4 who think that sharpness 3 is perhaps a little too soft. Maybe you feel that the razor blades don’t shave satisfactorily. This may be due to, for example, a slightly thicker beard growth and or that the beard hairs are thicker than usual.
Usually not a razor blade you start with but that you can switch to after a while if you feel that other razor blades do not do the job expected of the razor blade. A very common sharpness that many people choose. But it’s important to remember that these are slightly sharper than normal.
Extra sharp razor blades
Razor blade with sharpness 5. Suitable for those who want the absolute closest and sharpest shave with a safety razor imaginable. These razor blades are almost never recommended for beginners as it can be very easy to cut yourself on them. If you have a thick beard with thick beard hairs, this is what you need to use.
We always recommend taking great care in handling these blades.
Which double razor blade is right for me?
The first thing you should do is try to determine how coarse you assume your beard is. The easiest is to just feel the beard and try to guess. Starting with a razor blade that has a sharpness of 3 and trying a few times to evaluate. From there, you can then choose whether you want to continue with similar blades or have sharper or softer ones.
A very rough simplification and generalization can be that if you need to shave more than three times and still have quite a lot of beard growth left, you probably have a blade that is too soft for you. If you have cut yourself repeatedly before the first round, you probably have a blade that is too sharp for you.
This is not an exact science and what is said here is not an absolute truth. Always start from yourself and what you think suits you. There are several factors other than just the razor blade that can affect the result of your shave, even if the double razor blade is one of them. Since it is also something sharp that meets your soft skin, its impact can be quite large in comparison to others. Additional factors that can affect are, for example, the technique you use to shave, whether you have a good shaving lather and how sensitive your skin is.
Replace and recycle your double razor blades
Just like toothbrushes, dishcloths and other things, double razor blades should be replaced at regular intervals. Over time, the edge loses its sharpness. Something that can lead to a poorer shave and a greater risk of injury. How often you should change is up to you, some switch between each shave, others less often. If you shave every day, once a week to every other week can be a recommendation.
Double razor blades are made entirely of metal and can be recycled as metal. The best thing is to collect all the double razor blades in a small metal jar and then recycle the entire metal can when it is full. It saves the environment.
