What is a safety razor? We give you the answer

Since you have here you have probably heard of the word safety razor at some point. But what exactly is it? Is it a safe way to shave? Is there security in it?

A safety razor is a razor that has a protective comb or strip between the razor blade and the skin. In addition, a safety razor has only one blade.

The purpose of the protective comb or strip is to avoid direct contact between the razor blade and the skin. Something that makes it easier to shave and reduces the risk of injury compared to shaving with a razor.

The protective comb can be either closed comb. A closed comb means that the comb or strip has small recesses in a covering strip. The purpose is to help raise the beard hairs when shaving. An open comb has small teeth between the openings that are supposed to raise the beard hairs. The most common is a closed comb. Open comb is best suited for a person with very coarse beard growth.

What does a safety razor consist of?

A shaving head consisting of one or two loose parts. There are also shaving heads that are completely attached to the handle. The handle is the other important part. The parts are either entirely or partly made of metal. This means that they have a long durability and high durability. The shaving head is almost always made of metal. The handle is made entirely or partly of metal.

The shaver head

  • The shaving head consists of either one, two or three parts.
  • A two-piece shaver head has a fixed and a detachable part. A three-piece shaving head has two detachable parts.
  • There are shaving heads with butterfly openings.
  • A shaving head has either a closed or open comb.
  • A straight head can have either a completely straight or angled head.

Handle

  • The handle can be made entirely or partly of metal.
  • Other materials such as wood, synthetic materials, real horn, and porcelain are also present.
  • Synthetic materials such as epoxy plastic are used to mimic noble materials such as ivory, ebony, and tortoiseshell shells.
  • There are both longer and slightly shorter handles.

Straight razor or safety razor, what's the difference?

Safety razor, which in Swedish is also called a razor or safety razor. That’s because of the parts that make it easier and less risky than a straight razor to shave with. A straight razor is what is colloquially called a razor.

Shaving with a razor is both more difficult and time-consuming, at least initially. It also requires more care both before and after using the razor.

The advantage of shaving with a razor is that you can experience a closer shave and it can be somewhat easier to get precise lines. But for this to happen, very great skill is required when shaving.

The disadvantage is that it takes more knowledge and training to master the razor. In addition, more care. Before use, the razor should always be groomed to ensure that the sharpness of the edge is good.

Safety razor, system planer or multi-blade system, what's the difference?

Unlike the vast majority of cases, a safety razor always has only one razor blade. In addition, the razor blade is now almost always, exceptions are sharpened on both sides, i.e. double-sharpened razor blades or double-razor blades.

A system planer or multi-blade system has, as the name suggests, several single-sharpened razor blades, from 2-3 pieces up to five razor blades. These multi-blade systems come in cassettes with a mixture of metal and plastic that cannot be recycled afterwards.

Double razor blades made of metal can be recycled.

A safety razor also has a significantly longer lifespan than a system planer or multi-blade system.

Important things to consider when buying a safety razor

There are a few things that can be good to consider before buying your first planer. In the end, of course, it’s up to you and your preferences, but let’s present a few points that might be worth thinking about.

Most models and variants are very similar to each other in terms of functionality.

An all-metal planer is usually cheaper than together with other materials. A good choice for a first planer.

A planer has a very long lifespan, at least 10 years, maybe even longer depending on how well you take care of it.
