SAFETY RAZOR | SAFETY PLANER GUIDE
Why should I choose a safety razor?
In short, there are three good reasons.
- Economical (over time, you’ll save money compared to other ways of shaving)
- Climate-smart (In both the short and long term, wet shaving with a safety razor causes less emissions and waste compared to other ways of shaving)
- Skin-friendly (Compared to other ways of shaving)
Which planer should I choose?
Based on a few assumptions, let us recommend a planer that suits you.
I'm a beginner looking to buy my first planer
For a beginner, we recommend a planer with a closed comb and a metal handle. In addition, a short handle that gives you good precision and is easy to use.
Short handle and all-metal with a closed comb is a recommended choice for a beginner. Why? It provides better control and reduces the risk of cuts. The metal makes it durable and the weight helps with the right pressure. Short handle provides easier handling and precision for a smoother classic wet shave. In short, a planer of very high quality and long durability.
I have a coarse beard that other razors do not shave satisfactorily
If you have a coarse beard with thick beard hairs, we have two recommendations. Switch to a slightly thicker razor blade or an open-top razor.
A razor with an open comb is especially recommended for coarse beard growth with thick beard hairs. Especially if you feel that other razors are not giving you a satisfactory shave. With an open comb, the blade comes both closer to the beard stalk and it is easier to cut it off. However, the risk of cuts can increase slightly if you are not careful. Feel free to combine with a suitable razor blade.
I want to be able to adjust the angle of the razor blade for a more precise shave
Being able to more precisely adjust the angle of the razor blade yourself means that you can control in more detail how to shave and to suit your individual needs.
Here you can angle the blade to get the perfect shave. This allows you to get a closer shave than with a shaving head that has fewer angles.
Mainly recommended for those who have been wet shaving for a while and want to take the next step towards an even closer wet shave. For the best possible shave, good technique and an experienced hand are required.
I have slightly larger hands or want a planer with a longer handle
A longer handle can mean slightly poorer precision but can also make it easier to access where shorter handles do not.
For those with larger hands, it may also feel better to hold. As mentioned earlier, a slightly longer handle can cause the exact precision to be slightly poorer, but it is also easier to access where shorter handles have difficulty. In the end, it is also a matter of preference and taste, with some preferring longer handles and others shorter.
I would like a handle that is not metal or plastic
A handle made of metal or plastic that is very popular is, for example, wood of various kinds, in addition to which handles made of real horn and porcelain are available.
A choice for those who want to stand out something. Of course, the handles are very durable and durable. We have handles of, for example, wood of several different types and colours, real horn or porcelain. For these razors and many others, there is also a matching shaving brush to buy for a discounted price if it is purchased in conjunction with the razor. In addition, there are racks to buy, either separately or together. Then also at a reduced price.
The parts and materials
A razor usually has two or three parts, a handle and a shaving head consisting of one or two separate parts.
Handle
The handle is made entirely or partly of metal. It can be either slightly longer or shorter.
The choice of materials is purely in terms of form and aesthetics rather than practical and functional. Choosing a length can give slightly better precision or make it easier to shave in hard-to-reach places.
Material in the handle
Handles made of a synthetic plastic material such as Epoxy plastic (resin) have the advantage that it can mimic other more noble materials such as ivory, ebony, tortoiseshell, horns and different colors. Although this material is plastic, it is designed for very long durability, which still results in lower emissions and less plastic waste than plastic handles that have a short consumption.
Wooden handles can give a slightly more exclusive warmer feeling than other materials. There are a number of different types of wood such as African blackwood, black oak, Karelian curly birch, plum wood, olive trees and more. Since every tree is unique, every handle is also unique. The wood in the safety planers we sell all comes from sustainable cultivation.
All-metal handles have the advantage that they can probably last longer than other materials. At the same time, they may feel too hard and stiff in comparison. For those who appreciate a little extra weight in their planer, this is an obvious choice.
Rose gold or rose gold is a gold mixture that has been mixed with copper and aluminum to resemble gold color. This is then used for the handle. A very beautiful and also not too expensive alternative to a metal-colored handle.
Real horn handles are for those who want something extra, who want a natural material, a feeling of luxury and premium. Just as every horn is unique, so is every razor with a handle made of real horn.
Porcelain is a material that is both premium and synthetic. A choice for the truly style-conscious, who wants the ultimate and most exclusive. Who are not satisfied with materials that are similar but are actually genuine.
Length of the handle
Handles can also be either slightly longer or shorter.
A shorter handle is recommended if you want a more precise precision and better control or just have slightly smaller hands.
A longer handle is suitable for both larger hands and or if you find it difficult to access certain surfaces.
Shaving head
The shaver head is usually one of a few different variants. The most common is a shaving head in one part that is opened by screwing on the handle, a so-called butterfly opening. There are also shaving heads in two and three parts. Another variant is an angled shaving head.
Shaving head with butterfly opening
The butterfly opening shaver means that the shaver head is made of a composite part. When the shaver head is screwed up, the top is opened with the help of springs or another mechanism. Then you can place the razor blade in your head and close it shut. The advantage of such a head is that it is very easy to place the razor blade and then close. The disadvantage is that there are more small parts that can break.
Two-piece shaving head
The two-piece shaving head is a variant that has the lower part of the shaving head attached together with the handle. The upper part of the shaver head can be detached by screwing on the bottom of the razor and the double razor blade is placed between the attached lower part and the detachable upper part. The advantage here is that there is less loose parts. The disadvantage is that it is not possible to fine-tune and, if necessary, change the shaving head easily.
Three-piece shaving head
The three-piece shaving head is where both the upper and lower parts of the shaver head are removed and then the double shaving blade is placed between them before everything is screwed back together. The advantage here is that it is possible to switch from a closed to an open comb in some cases and or adjust the angle of the blade more. The disadvantage is that there are slightly more parts that can get lost. In addition, it can be somewhat more difficult to get the parts back together.
Angled shaving head
An angled shaver head means that the razor blade is slightly angled in the shaver head and not straight, which is otherwise most common. The advantage of an angled shaver head is that you can shave slightly closer to the skin and it can be easier to access and cut off particularly thick hairs. The downside is that they are a little harder to handle for someone unaccustomed to it.
Something that is the same for all variants of the shaver head, however, is that these are made of brass coated with chrome to last better and longer. In addition, be more resistant to water.
Choosing a shaving head with one or two detachable parts or butterfly opening is largely a matter of preference. Functionally, there is very little that separates them. Choosing a shaving head that can be adjusted at different angles is also very much a matter of preference.
Closed or open comb
A shaving head has either an open or closed comb. Something that affects its functioning.
Closed comb is by far the most common. This means that the shaving head has a small strip along the entire edge with small recesses. The purpose of these is both to protect the skin from directly coming into contact with the sharp razor blade and to lift up the beard hairs when shaving.
The open comb instead has small spines, teeth with cavities in between. The advantage here can be if you have an extra thick beard where a closed comb can have difficulty accessing and shaving really close.
Another variant of shaving head is a slightly angled shaving head. Instead of having a completely straight shaving head, this is angled slightly. This gives the blade a different angle when it cuts off the beard hairs. For those who appreciate an even closer shave, this can be an option.
Questions and answers about safety razors
In our guide, we have collected some of the most common questions we receive. If you have more or other questions, please feel free to contact us.
A soft brush, such as a toothbrush, can be used to remove all hair and any soap residue.
Remember not to use the same toothbrush that you use to brush your teeth to clean your razor. It can cause the spread of bacteria and viruses.
A good rule of thumb is that every time you change the razor blades, also unscrew all the parts of the razor and clean them.
Strong detergents and the like can have a corrosive effect on the metal and should therefore be avoided. Use only a mild detergent if necessary. In the vast majority of cases, water is just fine.
Yes, it works fine
It is possible to use all double razor blades with all the razors that we sell due to the fact that most double razor blades have the same dimensions and fit into most razors. This gives the user a great advantage as it is easy to try different blades and find the one that works best for their needs.
Being able to try different blades gives the user the opportunity to customize the shave according to their skin and beard type, as well as to find the blade that provides the smoothest and tightest shave. This can also lead to a reduction in irritated skin and beard stubble due to the user finding the blade that is best suited for their skin.
Being able to use all double razor blades with all razors also provides increased accessibility for the user as they do not have to be tied to a specific blade or razor mark. This allows the user to find the blade that works best for them, regardless of where they are located or what brand is available.
Perhaps the most common question of them all.
Normally, you need to replace the double razor blade after about 3-7 shaves. It is important to point out that some people need or want to change significantly more often, while others manage longer.
This can vary depending on factors such as beard growth, hardness of hairs, and how much you shave at a time. You can also feel the blade to determine if it is still sharp or if it has become dull and should be replaced.
It is important to change the blade regularly to avoid irritation and get a close and comfortable shave. In addition, the risk of cuts increases if you use a dull blade. By having multiple blades on hand and replacing them regularly, you can maintain a consistently high quality of shaving.
Make sure your planer is clean and dry when you start. And that you have clean and dry hands. That makes it easier.
Start by unscrewing the shaver head and loosening either the top part or both parts from the handle.
If you are using a razor with a butterfly opening, screw up and open up the shaver head.
Carefully remove the used double razor blade. Feel free to put it in a smaller tin can or metal box. When it’s full, you can recycle the entire jar or box.
If necessary, you can take the opportunity to clean the shaver head carefully and wash off any soap residue and the like that has stuck. Remember to do this carefully and use clean hands.
Carefully reach out and place the new double razor blade between the lower and upper parts of the shaver head or in the opening of the shaver head.
Replace the upper and possibly the lower part of the shaver head on the handle and screw the shaver head back on.
Screw the butterfly opening back together on the shaver head.
You are now ready to use your planer with a new blade.
We recommend that you store your planer hanging or inclined in a rack. This is so that the water can easily drain off. If the water collects in a fragile part of the safety planer and remains there, it can lead to unnecessary damage to the safety plane. In the long run, it can lead to the planer breaking down and no longer being usable.
