What to consider when buying your first safety razor

What to consider when buying your first safety razor? A question you probably asked yourself and are therefore now here. Most safety razors are basically the same. They consist of a handle together with a shaving head in one or two detachable parts. The parts are a handle together with a shaving head that consists of one or two parts. It doesn’t matter if your shaver head has one or two detachable parts. To protect the skin from the sharp razor blade, there is also a comb.

The parts of a safety planer

Holding your first safety razor in your hand is a pleasant feeling of just the right weight. Your first safety razor, and probably the following ones all have roughly the same parts.

The shaving head of a safety razor is in almost all cases made of metal, usually brass that has been given an alloy of chromium for improved durability and longevity.

The handle of a safety planer can be made entirely or partly of metal. Other materials such as hard plastics (resin/resin often used to mimic other materials), wood, real horn, and other metals are also present. The type of material you choose for handles is purely a matter of preference. There are also slightly longer handles and slightly shorter ones.

A longer handle can be suitable if you have very large hands and or difficulty accessing certain places during your wet shave. A shorter handle can give you slightly better control, but it’s basically a matter of taste.

Safety planers that have adjustable heads and other features are also available. However, for a first razor, a simple one that has a one- or two-piece shaving head works great. A safety planer with an adjustable head allows the angle of the blade to change slightly.

Your First Safety Razor Closed or Open Comb Shaving Guide

Closed or open comb?

An important detail when buying your first safety razor is whether it has either a closed or open comb. This means that on the head of the shaver between the blade and the skin, there is a small protective comb. The comb’s job is both to protect the skin and to help the beard hairs up so that the razor blade can cut them off. A safety razor with a closed comb has small recesses along the comb where the beard hairs can be raised. A safety razor with an open comb instead has teeth or spikes with empty spaces between them. This makes it easier for coarser beard hairs to stand up.

When you are getting your first safety razor, we almost always recommend a closed comb. If you have a very coarse beard, you can switch to an open-comb safety razor if you feel like it after a while. Of course, there is nothing to say that you cannot start with an open comb right away. However, you should then be a little more careful to avoid injuries.

How much should your first safety razor cost?

As with everything else, it is up to your own liking, what budget you have to buy your first safety razor.

Our range includes safety razors from SEK 279 up to SEK 1,495. The average price is just over SEK 700.

The big difference is the choice of material, especially in the handle.

A safety planer in the lower price range is made entirely or largely of metal. It should also be said right away that the metal in these razors is by no means of poor quality, they will last a long time. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced in wet shaving, with such a safety razor, you’ll have an excellent shaving experience every time. If your first safety razor is metal, you’ll probably keep it around for a long time and enjoy it.

The safety razors available in the highest price ranges have handles made of more exclusive materials such as real horn or precious woods (of course in both cases very sustainably produced). This is a safety razor for those who may want something extra. The function is the same as the safety razors in the lower price ranges, but the appearance is more exclusive.
